About

That Standards Guy is the online persona of Karl Dawson, a web developer living and working in Ipswich, England.

I'm a member of the Guild of Accessible Web Designers and the Web Standards Group and team member at Accessites—an awards site to recognise accessible and usable websites.

I specialise as a front-end developer and worry about the minutae of semantic (X)HTML and CSS, accessibility, microformats, typographic rhythm and grid design. I also care about the user experience and remind myself constantly of visitor site goals when working with clients and their aims.

That Standards Guy is proudly powered by WordPress using my own “StrictlyTSG v3.0” theme. Site Policies.

Foolish Web Development

I like the Foolish advice on offer at the Motley Fool website so when their latest email proclaimed of a new home page I just had to go peak under the hood.

How foolish! An incorrectly declared DOCTYPE for starters: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">. Hmmm. It gets worse with improperly closed tags, unescaped ampersands, proprietary tags and a real mish-mash of CSS and table-based layout. My eyes started bleeding halfway through so this isn’t an exhaustive list.

I suspect that, as the incorrect DOCTYPE hints at, this is a transitional move of old content to a new look but Fools, please use a development box and give us the new look when you’re properly ready. Oh, and don’t forget the investors with accessibility issues either. Ta.
